pomplamouse - tribute to famous peopleAn "Occasional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

Want to listen? Head over to my blip.fm profile and look for the songs tagged #five4friday.

  1. Pomplamoose - Mrs Robinson from Tribute to Famous People
Pomplamoose is a fun band. I love her voice (I think the harmonies are all her too). I'm pretty sure Bill at Thinklngs turned me on to them. A fun version of a Simon & Garfunkel classic (This is from a covers disk.) This is available as a free downloaded from their MySpace page.
  2. Big Brother and the Holding Company - Piece of My Heart from Janis Joplin's Greatest Hits
It's Janis Joplin singing perhaps her most famous song. What more needs to be said? Awesome stuff.
  3. Sting - Fragile from Nothing Like the Sun
I like this Sting album, a departure from his Police years. This is an light, airy song.
  4. Huffamoose - Mary from WCBE Vol. 2 - Where are my Headphones?
Huh, two 'amoose' bands. :-D Not the best song from the WCBE disks, pretty bleh. Even the singer seems kinda bored.
  5. Kelly Clarkson - Gone from Breakaway
I tend to like Kelly Clarkson (am I loosing man points admitting that?), but I'd never heard this one. My wife bought the CD, this must be one of the 'other' tracks that didn't get airplay. Not a bad song though.

cetera - solitudeAn "Occasional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

As with last time, I'm going to head over to blip.fm after I post this and blip each track so you can listen. Head to my blip.fm profile to have a listen. I'll tag them #five4friday too.

  1. Peter Cetera - Glory of Love from Solitude / Solitaire
A staple of those late evening sappy "songs for lovers" kind of radio shows I'm sure (I'm looking at you Delilah), this is something my wife bought from iTunes and so it ended up in our shared library. Not bad, per se, but not something I would have bought.
  2. Petra - All Fired Up from Petra Means Rock
From their 1995 greatest hits album, I'm not certain when it was originally released. By the sound, I'm guessing mid 80's. I like Petra in general, the older stuff in particular. A decent song, but not great.
  3. U2 - One from Achtung Baby
One of their classics. I've grown to appreciate U2 more in recent years as I've learned more about how their faith (or maybe just Bono's?) has influenced their music.
  4. Sparks From the Wheel - The Hat Song from WCBE Vol. 2 - Where are my Headphones?
This is a folks-y, country-ish song, like so many on these WCBE live disks. A good tune, not great. I couldn't find it on blip.fm, sorry.
  5. The Why Store - Lack of Water from WCBE Mixx on the Fly Vol. 4
Another WCBE track and (surprise!) it's heavy on the acoustic guitar, but not as folks-y as others. This is a nice catchy tune, not sure how I'd categorize it. I found it on blip.fm, go check it out and tell me what you think.

First Call - God is GoodAn "Occasional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

I'm going to try something different this time. I'm going to head over to blip.fm after I post this and blip each track so you can listen. Head to my blip.fm profile to have a listen. I'll tag them #five4friday too. If it works OK, I'll keep doing it when i post a FfF.

  1. First Call - Parable of the River from God is Good
This is my favorite First Call song. It's got an 80's rock/pop feel to it (1989 actually) mixed with the passion of an old school gospel. Great song.
  2. REO Speedwagon - Ridin' the Storm Out from The Hits
I love 70's rock and this is an awesome live version of a great REO tune.
  3. Heart - Magic Man from These Dreams: Heart's Greatest Hits
More classic 70's rock and another great tune. The 70's were awful for cars, but pretty good for music.
  4. Solomon Burke - Fading Footsteps from Make Do With What You Got
I got turned onto Solomon Burke, I think, by listening to WCBEs Blue Collar blues show on Sunday nights. Blue Collar has been in reruns for months, unfortunately. Not a bad track, but not the best on the disc.
  5. Casting Crowns - Shadow of Your Wings from Until the Whole World Hears
My enthusiasm for Casting Crowns has faded, too much airplay on the local station. But this is a good, harder driving track than their normal stuff. Pretty good, if you're turned of by the mainstream pop nature of CC, give this a listen.

WCBE LogoAn "Occassional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

  1. John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky - A Saint's Complaint from WCBE - Vol. 9 - Double Dose
Another great live tune from one of WCBE's 'Live From Studio A' recordings. A folksy tune recorded with acoustic guitar and two singers.
  2. The Turtles - Happy Together from Happy Together
The 60's were awesome times for popular music, weren't they? I'm betting that many of you will leave this post with this song in your head. You're welcome.
  3. Don Henley - Sunset Grille from Building the Perfect Beast
I think this was one of the 2 or 3 hits from this 1984 release. A bit long at almost 6 1/2 minutes. Don Henley has a cynical edge to him that appeals to me, which is not likely a good thing. A good disc overall.
  4. Styx - The Best of Times from Classics, Vol. 15
This was originally from Paradise Theater, arguably their peak album. This was a more mellow, pop oriented Styx than their earlier stuff. Still feels like classic Styx, though, with their unique harmonies and piano work. (Of course, the next album, Kilroy was Here, was full on 80's pop with a little rock opera mixed in, but I'll save that for another FfF.)
  5. Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama - Mother Pray from There Will be a Light
The Blind Boys are awesome. I wish I could generate the kind of resonance that bass does. Heard these guys on WCBE a while back.

The Beautiful LetdownAn "Occassional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

  1. Switchfoot - Amunition from The Beautiful Letdown
Great song from a great CD. I like Switchfoot's way of putting a spiritual message in a song so that it's hidden, hoping to reach non-believers and get folks to think. Not sure if it works, but I appreciate it.
  2. Keith Green - Jesus Commands Us to Go! from The Ministry Years, Vol. 2
Keith Green has some awesome songs, but this isn't one of them. Sappy, mushy, milquetoast. I bought both of the Keith Green collection sets (4 CDs total) thinking that a guy who wrote The Sheep and the Goats and Asleep in the Light was worth owning the whole collection. I was wrong, too much is standard CCM fluff, like this one.
  3. Jimmie Lunceford - Annie Laurie from Big Band Bash
This is a 2 CD collection of original big band recordings which is awesome stuff. Old recordings, not remastered so there are pops and clicks and the range of sound is truncated, but the music is great.
  4. Metallica - The Struggle Within from Metallica
Great song, some PG-13 lyrics, but a great driving song that gets my blood pumping.
  5. REO Speedwagon - Take it on the Run from The Hits
    Classic REO, great stuff.

Barlow Girl Home for ChristmasAn "Occassional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

Last week I said that it was my last Friday opportunity to do a Christmas themed Five for Friday. OK, so I'm calender-ally challenged and I didn't realize that Christmas was on a Friday, so here's a bonus Christmas FfF for you.

  1. Barlow Girl - Angelic Proclamation (Medley) from Home for Christmas
A nice medley of Hark The Herald Angels Sing and O Come All Ye Faithful. Gotta love the Barlow Girl harmonies.
  2. Simon Wynberg - Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine from The Narada Christmas Collection, Volume 2
Nice orchestral piece. Melody reminds me of 'Good Christian Men Rejoice'.
  3. Mark Schultz and Nichole Nordeman - Silent Night from WOW Christmas [Red]
Not sure who Mark Schultz and Nichole Nordeman are, but this is a nice version of the song that manages to fit into the 'Christian Contemporary' genre without being completely bland. If it wasn't a Christmas song, it would likely not succeed there.
  4. Vince Guaraldi Trio - O Tannenbaum from A Charlie Brown Christmas
Awesome piano, bass and snare drum jazz version, as you'd expect from the Vince Guaraldi Trio.
  5. Straight No Chaser - the Twelve Days of Christmas from Christmas Cheer [Deluxe]
No, I didn't orchestrate this based on Dad's comment from last week, it came up on it's own. Srsly. Great harmonies and funny stuff. "I have a little dreidel ..."

Barlow Girl Home for ChristmasAn "Occassional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

Yeah, I'm a day late, sorry. I wanted to do Christmas music yesterday and I forgot. We have over 20 hours of Christmas music in our digital library.

  1. Barlow Girl - It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year from Home for Christmas
This is a new one this year, and pretty good too. This is a great version of an old classic with their great harmonies.
  2. Bing Crosby - White Christmas from The Perfect Christmas (White Barn Candle Co.)
Is it really Christmas until you've heard bo-bo-bo-bo Bing Crosby sing this? No, I don't think so.
  3. Unknown - Carol of the Bells from Contemporary Holiday Classics (Coca-Cola & Speedway)
This version feels like a cross between Narada and Mannheim Steamroller. No info on the disc at all on who these folks are.
  4. Tingstad & Rumbel - Silent Night from Star of Wonder
Not sure who these folks are, but it's a nice mellow arrangement, again in the style of Narada.
  5. Trick Pony - Winter Wonderland from The Perfect Christmas (White Barn Candle Co.)
A country version of a Christmas classic. Singer sounds a lot like Dolly Parton.
  6. Trans Siberian Orchestra - Siberian Sleighride [Instrumental] from The Lost Christmas Eve
A bonus since I'm late and I love TSO so much. Getting the Trans Siberian Orchestra out is one of my favorite things about Christmas.

Your turn, fire up your MP3 player, put it on random, select Christmas music this time, and give me your Christmas list in the comments.

Ch'uwa YacuAn "Occassional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

  1. Agua Clara - Tu Nombre Empieza Con "N" from Ch'uwa Yacu
This is one of a couple Peruvian flute based CD's we got at street fairs. Great background music for having dinner guests. In searching for the album art, I discovered that I had reversed the band and CD name in my library, LOL Looks like you can download some of their music from their web site for free.
  2. Enya - Caribbean Blue from Shepherd Moons
I love Enya adn have several of her CDs. Also great dinner guest music.
  3. Styx - All in a Days Work from Edge of the Century
This is a great song that doesn't sound like traditional Styx, probably mostly due to the lead singing not being Tommy Shaw or Dennis DeYoung. This post-reunion CD features short lived new lead singer Glen Burtnik. Great, acoustic almost folksy song with strings and even accordion and a thought provoking message.
  4. Southern Culture on the Skids - Shotgun from Mixx on the Fly - Live From Studio A Vol. 6
I love these WCBE CDs and I have the first 9 of 11. This is a great, driving rockabilly song.
  5. Bangles - Crash and Burn from Everything
Yeah, I like the Bangles. I guess I'm a sucker for a pretty girl-voice, what can I say. Typical 80's style pop, which is not a bad thing.

Your turn, fire up your MP3 player, put it on random and give me yours in the comments.

Heart - These DreamsHaven't done this in a while, let's see what comes up.

If you don't remember, Five For Friday is an "Occassional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

  1. Heart - Barracuda from These Dreams: Heart's Greatest Hits
Strong start, great classic rock tune from one of the greatest female rock band of the 70's.
  2. First Call - Bless Ye The Lord from Undivided
Well, that was an awkward transition. Seventies rock to mainstream 80's (1986) Christian song. Pretty standard Christian musical fluff from the era.
  3. Damn Yankees - Damn Yankee from Damn Yankees
Speaking of awkward transitions, this one borders on unholy. I love these guys, Tommy Shaw's vocals combined with Nugent's guitar work makes for some great, driving hard rock. Great song.
  4. Poco - Call it Love from Legacy
I love this pop tune with vaguely country guitar work. This was the single, but it's not a bad CD altogether.
  5. IIIrd Time Out - Everybody's Gonna Have a Wonderful Time Up There from Mixx on the Fly - Live From Studio A Volume 6
Another from WCBE's compilations. We seem to be on a Rock - Christian - Rock - Christian theme, although this is a Christian song by a Bluegrass group. This is a great A Capella song with bass lead. I frequently put this one on repeat and sing a long, although it scrapes the bottom of my range. Off IIIrd Time Out's disk, Living on the Otherside

Five for Friday

WCBE LogoAn "Occassional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

  1. Candye Kane - Ramblin' Blues from Fly on the Wall - Lost Tracks From Studio A, Vol. 8
Nice mellow blues / jazz tune recorded live here in Columbus.
  2. Tammy Wynette - Stand By Your Man from Sleepless in Seattle Soundtrack
Classic, old school country (the best kind).
  3. Styx - Paradise from Return to Paradise
Then obligatory new song on a 'Best Of' or in this case a Live compilation. True to form, it's a mediocre song that doesn't do the band's history justice. Feels like it was plucked out of the mid-80's even though the album is from 1997.
  4. Michael W. Smith - [Untitled Hidden track] from The Big Picture
Short (42 seconds) piano and bass jazzy tune, like something you'd hear from the band on Michael Feldmen's Whad'ya Know?
  5. Heart - Alone from These Dreams: Heart's Greatest Hits [1997]
Classic female rock originally from 1987.

Your turn, fire up your MP3 player, put it on random and give me yours in the comments.

Poison - Flesh and Blood.jpgAn "Occasional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

  1. Poison - Strange Days of Uncle Jack from Flesh and Blood
This is the odd, airy 1:40 first track on the CD. Mumbling in the background, voice mail beeps. Weird. Makes you wonder what's up with your MP3 player.
  2. REM - Country Feedback from Out of Time
Slow, vaguely angry song that builds in intensity. Nice.
  3. Harry Connick, Jr - On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe from 25
Great song. Starts simple with vocals and string bass only, adding piano and alto sax at the bridge. Neat stuff.
  4. Jimmy Durante - Make Someone Happy from the Sleepless in Seattle Soundtrack
OK, stop snickering, yes, it's a chick flick soundtrack, but there's some great music here. This track is awesome.
  5. Perta - I Can Be Friends With You from Never Say Die/Washes Whiter Than
Wow, this was a diverse list, wasn't it? Petra from their early southern rock-ish days. Arguably the best Petra, certainly better than their 80's hair band days.

Your turn, fire up your MP3 player, put it on random and give me yours in the comments.

Metallica - Metallica.jpgAn "Ocassional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

Today, I'm up against a deadline at work. When I need to put my head down and get the work done, I put the headphones on and fire up my 'Metal' playlist (which is more 'Hard Rock' than just 'Metal'). Nothing gets the creative juices flowing and ramps up my productivity better. I'm on my lunch now, so I can get a FfF in.

Mom and Dad might want to look away. :-D

  1. Metallica - Wherever I May Roam from Metallica
This is exactly what I'm talking about. Driving beat, aggressive. Just feels like hard work getting done. I'm not a Metallica fan-boy, but I love this album.
  2. Metallica - My Friend Misery from Metallica
With a limited play list, it's not surprising that Metallica would come up twice. A little slower, but still a driving beat.
  3. Nelson - Bits and Pieces from After the Rain
Well, this is actually kinda embarrassing. One, because not many folks would consider Nelson anything close to metal and two not many folks would admit to owning a Nelson album. I actually like it and the heavy guitars and driving beat fit with the theme here, even though most Metallica fans would cringe at Metallica and Nelson mentioned in the same context.
  4. Nelson - Will You love Me from After the Rain
Figures, another Nelson tune. I was tempted to hit next and pretend it didn't happen, but that's not how FfF works. Not nearly as good and not as effective here. Frankly, neither Nelson tune is as effective as Metallica.
  5. Poison - Let it Play from Flesh & Blood
Nelson might be stretched in to metal, but Poison I don't think so. A good, driving rock song, one of the best on the album.

Your turn, fire up your MP3 player, put your Get 'er Done Music on random and give me your list in the comments. Me, I gotta get back to work.

Five For Friday

An "Ocassional Series" here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

  1. Adiemus - Adiemus from Songs of Sanctuary
Even on random, this song is always the first song played when I click 'All Music' in Media Player here at work (at home it's different). I usually skip it, but thought I'd let it play today. I first heard this on WCBE and loved it. Airy vocals and full orchestration, it has an Enya feel about it but also some African vibes, although the composer is British. According to Wikipedia, there is no language, it's just sounds and random syllables. Instead of an album art, enjoy the surreal music video above.
  2. Casting Crowns - Voice of Truth from Casting Crowns
I love Casting Crowns, even though they've been played and over played. Their lyrics have a Kieth Green quality to them in that they speak to the church, often times in rebuke.
  3. The Fairfield Four - Lonesome Valley from the O Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack
Four guys doing a free flowing negro spiritual. If you like A Capella or Negro spirituals, you may enjoy this. If not, it's hard to listen to. I like this it, but other folks usually say "What the heck is that?!?".
  4. File - One Foot in the Bayou from WCBE Mixx on the Fly, Volume 6
I'm not sure about the artist, but it seems right based on a web search. Great live blues tune recorded here in Columbus at WCBE.
  5. Bob Dylan - Rainy Day Women #12 And #35 from the Forest Gump soundtrack, disc 1
Two from soundtracks, interesting since I think I only own three soundtracks. I never knew this was the song's title. You may think of it as "Everybody Must Get Stoned". The two disc Gump soundtrack is full of great old 60s adn 70s songs.

Your turn, fire up your MP3 player, put it on random and give me yours in the comments.

Five for Friday

REM Out Of TimeI've not been very consistent on my Five for Friday's, so I'm going to call this an "Ocassional Series" here at Salguod.net. Friday is almost done, so here we go.

  1. REM - Low from Out of Time
Don't remember if this was popular release from this album, but I like it. Slow and a bit mellow, as fitting the title.
  2. Phish - Grind from Undermind
What do you know, a short (under a minute) little barbershop-esque song. I was disappointed in this disc. I heard Undermind and a couple other songs so I asked for it for Christmas. The rest of the disc is meh, but this is a fun A Capella number.
  3. Harry Connick Jr. - Music, Maestro, Please! from 25
This is a jazzy piano solo. Big band-ish without the big band. Fun.
  4. Bill Miller - River of Time from WCBE Mixx on the Fly Volume 5
Nice singer songwriter tune with acoustic guitar and harmonica. From Bill Miller's album Raven in the Snow
  5. First Call - Legacy from God is Good
From the frequency that First Call is coming up here, you'd think my library was filled with them. I've never been impressed with Media Player's random function. Doesn't seem all that random at times. As far as this song, pretty standard mellow Christan Music stuff. There are a couple of good songs on this CD.

Your turn, fire up your MP3 player, put it on random and give me yours in the comments.

WCBE LogoWe just got back from a camping vacation with friends in the beautiful Seneca Rocks area of West Virginia. We got home Thursday night and spent yesterday cleaning up and drying out our rain soaked gear. Our friends have gone home, so now I can do my belated FfF.

So, Media Player on random, here we go.

  1. David Mead - She, Louisa from WCBE's Lucky Seven, Mixx on the Fly, Volume 7
WCBE is one of the local NPR stations and they've put out a series of CDs from live performances from artists coming to the area to play. This is from his the luxury of time album. Nice singer and his guitar track.
  2. Sisai - Llorando Se Fue (Lambada) from the CD Florecer
This is a CD we bought at a street fair when we lived in Detroit. A trio were playing Andes music and had this for sale. I don't think this is their CD, although the music is very similar. Great background music for having dinner guests.
  3. Petra - Chameleon from Never Say Die / Washes Whiter Than
This is old school Petra with two of their original albums on one CD. I guess this was pretty radical stuff for Christian music in its day.
  4. Norah Jones - The Long Day Is Over from Come Away With Me
    Slow, bluesy song.
  5. The Cranberries - Disappointment from No Need to Argue
This song makes good use of Dolores O'Riordan's voice, flipping as she does from full voice to falsetto chest voice to head voice (My sister tells me I had the terms wrong. A woman doesn't have a falsetto voice, rather a "head voice").

Hmm, 5 relatively obscure songs.

Five for Friday

The Smithereens - 11Daniel Ross at Alien Soil has been doing Five for Friday for some time and I always enjoy it. He borrowed the idea from someone else and I'm borrowing it from him.

The deal is this. He fires up his iPod, sets it on random and hits play. First five songs get posted to his blog. I don't have an iPod, so Windows Media Player will have to do.

  1. Smithereens - William Wilson from 11 (1989)
I love this CD, prettty much everything. I heard them while a freshman in college on somebody's boom box and I was sold. I borrowed the CD and played it endlessly in my discman for a day and bought the CD later. This isn't my favorite song from the disc, but I like it. I always felt like there's some hidden meaning going on but never figured out what it was.
  2. U2 - Until the End of the World from Achtung Baby (1991)
Not a song I'm familiar with, but not bad. I've got the CD so it's on my computer.
  3. First Call - Snap to It from Undiviided (1986)
First Call is a jazz vocal group very similar to Manhattan Transfer. My sister turned me on to them years ago. This one is a snappy (get it? Heh.) a Capella number. Fun song. If you like vocal harmonies, you'll like this. This reminds me a bit of Take 6.
  4. Paul Simon - Under African Skies from Graceland (1986)
Great CD, I've had this one since High School maybe.
  5. First Call - True Love from God is Good (1989)
Wow, all 5 from my college years and two from First Call. This is not a Capella and is not nearly as good. A pretty mediocre pop-ish religious song frankly. This reminds me of a cross between early Amy Grant and Michael Bolton. Yeah.
