Four Amish in a Buick

Seen on I-70 in eastern Indiana on our holiday weekend road trip:

An Amish family of four - complete with Papa's beard and wide brim hat, and Mama and 2 teenage daughters in their white bonnets - driving a late model Buick LeSabre with Kansas plates.

I know that some Amish are more strict than others, but after passing a couple in their buggies on Missouri gravel roads on Saturday, it was a little surreal seeing them doin' 70 MPH in a large GM quasi-luxoliner, I'm sure with power windows and locks, AC and cruise control.

It also strikes me that "Four Amish in a Buick" is a good name for a rock band. Or maybe "Big Amish Buick" or "Amish Buick Daddy".

when i first read the title i thought you were telling a joke. but a band name is not a bad idea.

I like just "4 Amish Buick" It tells a story, yet leaves an enigmatic feeling.

Definitely a truth stranger than fiction type of story.

Sounds better than four Mennonites and a Bentley...

Ok, I'll stop.

Wow that's tabloid news! I wonder where they were going?

Funny stuff, Doug! But I have some info for you:

"Four Amish in a Buick" is the name of the number one hit song performed by "The Wild Brothers Amish".
And just a little FYI: Their number 2 hit from last year was "Mustaches And Military For All!". Amish parents everywhere were in an uproar over that one.

Jeff - Lying is a sin and I need the name and number of your discipler so I can turn you in for a good rebuke. :-)

You're likely to waste people's valuable time as they go off Googling "Four Amish in a Buick" and "The Wild Brothers Amish".

Not that I did that, of course, I knew you were joshin', yesiree. Just trying to save some other folks some time you know.

I thought Harrison Ford had the lead in the movie version of Four Amish in a Buick, but perhaps I'm confusing that with something else. I'd better be careful among them English, eh?

The first car I bought when I got out of college was a Buick. I can say from personal experience that your observation says more about Buicks than it does about any changing Amish mores.

'Love the band name idea!

Close, but I think that's Samuel L. Jackson and the title is Snakes on a Plane... Heh. Just can't stop myself...

Jeff,
I knew ya was a lying because they couldn't hear the songs! Wait they might have overheard in one of the villages while making jam. Mmmmm jam.

I need the name and number of your discipler so I can turn you in for a good rebuke

OK...He's got a toll free number which can be dialed only while on your knees.
(Ha-Ha-Ha...sniff...Heh...)
;-)

(seriously, did you look it up?)

Upon advice of my attorney and under the protections afforded me by the 5th amendment of the consitution, I cannot answer that question.

YOU DID!!! YOU REALLY DID!!!

Oh no...that is just too precious. I never thought anyone would take it seriously. It never even crossed my mind.

You have indeed made my day.

Don't worry. I won't tell anyone you know.

Amish Song...(Four Amish in a Buick)

As I walk through the valley where I harvest my grain
I take a look at my life and realize it's very plain
But that's just perfect for an Amish like me
You know I shun fancy things like electricity
At 4:30 in the morning I'm milkin' cows
Jebediah feeds the chickens and Jacob plows...
And I've been milkin' and plowin' so long that
Even Ezekiel thinks that my mind is gone
I'm a man of the land, I'm into discipline
Got a Bible in my hand and a beard on my chin
But if I finish all of my chores and you finish thine
Then tonight we're gonna party like it's 1699

We been spending most our lives
Living in an Amish paradise
I've churned butter once or twice
Living in an Amish paradise
It's hard work and sacrifice
Living in an Amish paradise
We sell quilts at a discount price
Living in an Amish paradise

Isaiah and I will pick up our black robed chicks
We'll make lots of noise driving our steel wheeled Buick.
It's a LeSabre black with glass packs.
The tourists can't see it behind the hay stack.
Each Sunday morning we buff it up shinny.
If I lean up against it Pa kicks my hinie.
Someday Isaiah and our girls are going to do a double weddn'
Going on our honeymoon not knowing where we're headn'
We'll become men grow our beards and stop using Schick.
Then people will say there goes four Amish in a Buick.

BEG - That's a riot! (BTW - The Buickwas brown. it actually would have been wierder, I think, if it were a sinister looking black.)

Jeff - See, that's how a spoof is done. No simple deceit about some non-existant band played off as real, BEG actually writes a song! OK, so its just one new verse to an existing song, but still ... And no one's ego was harmed in his joke. :-D

But that's OK, Jeff. Really, I'll be fine. Honest. <sniff>.

I so love you Jeff! Ya know I do!

P. I'm glad you read it. I was hoping you would. Do you think I have the gift! :)
