Ah, Springtime in Ohio ...

You know, whet the National Weather Service cancels the Winter Storm Warning for your area in favor of a Blizzard Warning, you might be in trouble.

Here's how the forecast went:

  • Thursday night 11:00 news: 6-10 inches by Saturday afternoon.

  • Friday morning at 6:45 as Jess got on the bus: 8-14 inches by Saturday afternoon.

  • Friday morning when I got to work at 8:30: 12-15 inches by Saturday afternoon.

We were supposed to have 1-3 by the end of Friday, I shoveled 5" off the driveway after work. The top picture is what I saw at 8:00 this morning, the one at left is after cleaning the driveway again. Should have a couple more inches to shovel by the time the day's out. Judging by the pile on our swing set, we've gotten at least 12" so far.

Church is by small groups tomorrow because the school we meet in won't open the building for us, but I'm doubting we'll get out of our neighborhood by then.

byevad, I'm working on matching you.

UPDATE 2PM: Just shoveled another 3" - 4" and judging by the radar, we've got a couple more hours of snow coming. I'm thinking we'll be close to 20" before it's over, which is crazy. Cleveland is supposed to get it even worse.

The neighbors are using their Suburban to tow their kids down the street on their sleds. Fun, I'm sure, but doesn't seem too bright.

UPDATE 7PM: Well, the snow finally stopped after 5 and the sun actually came out briefly. Audrey and I measured 12-13 inches in a couple of spots in the middle of the yard, but it's been blowing a lot and that could be less there due to that. I'm pretty sure that we got well over the predicted 15 inches, closer to 18, but maybe it just seemed that way as I shoveled it. :-P

I added the shovel shot for byevad. Yeah, not quite the same as his but hey, the ground was bare 36 hours ago!

UPDATE SUNDAY: Well, the official total is 20.4 inches, breaking a single storm record from 1910 (15.3 inches) and the 15.4 inches since midnight Saturday broke a 24 hour record from 1987 (12.2 inches). See, I wasn't crazy after all!

I saw a reporter from Cincinnati this morning on the Today Show.. it was coming down pretty hard.

Take care of yourself.. work in smaller snow shoveling shifts, hydrate and dress warm.

..but I don't think that you will catch up with byevad ths weekend :)

Yeah, I think it's been close to an inch an hour at times. Almost 3 more inches out there since I finshed shoveling at around 9:00. It's slowing now, though.

I had planned on shoveling every 5"-6", but when I went out there at 8:00 there was 10 new inches overnight, and I went to bed at midnight and it had stopped then.

Your right, I'm not going to catch byevad, but 3'-4' tall piles is pretty good considering that Friday morning there was no snow at all.

I'll just say I'm glad I don't live in Ohio. I would tell you the temperature here in S. Texas but I think if I did I would probably be in sin...

They got slammed in N. Texas - not as bad as y'all but a lot for folks that aren't used to it.

We still have probably 7-10 inches of hard packed snow on the ground here. Last night it was in the -14 range but got up to 29 today! I can deal with the snow but am getting tired of the cold. Only getting down to 10 tonight...yeah! We just seem to be hitting the jet stream right on this year. To the On the West Coast and East Coast they've been a lot warmer than the Midwest this year it seems.

Looks like you will be having some fun. Snow day for everyone! Kids are probably wishing it was during the week. If I remember Ohio correctly though, it'll be gone in a couple of days. :)

Yep. Tuesday we'll be above freezing, Wednesday in the mid 40's and over 50 Thursday. Mid 40's Friday and Saturday too. The piles will take a while to melt, but we'll see grass before next week is out I bet.

Wow, that's some snow! Thanks for the "shovel reference shot". :)

We've had quite a bit of rain over the last couple of days so our snow banks have shrunk a little. I can see more of our lamp posts. But there's still quite a bit of it.

I will say that you sure did post some prettier pictures than I did. I love the fresh-fallen, not disturbed by humans yet photos. That's the time when I love the snow. But man, does that shift as soon as I pick up a shovel...

Enjoy it while it lasts, 'cause it sounds like it won't last for very long!

Yeah, I saw that. I think the same system that dumped on us gave you guys the rain.

Glad you liked the photos. I loved being out in the morning when it was all undisturbed. It was so quiet, the snow muffling the sound. It was great - until I scooped that first shovel full. :-P

It's already going away. Today was just over freezing and sunny. Since the snow was the light and fluffy kind, as the temps warmed, the snow is collapsing. Still a lot, but noticeably shallower.

wow I had the sun roof opened and the tunes cranked-we're in the fifties.

Still trying to recover from the freezing rain that took out trees down in Oklahoma.
